Ever wondered the best way to introduce vitamin a (Retinoids) into your skincare routine?
There are a few simple points to take into consideration to get the most effective results from your chosen retinol.
1. Finding the formula right for you
Retinols are available in a variety of forms, so finding the type of retinol that works best with your skin type is key.
Remember, the formula is key with regards to if it is
an over the counter or prescription strength and what the blend of ingredients are that are providing the base in which the active is suspended in.
The specific brands guidelines of use will also have an impact on how and when to use.
If you are new to retinol, introduce it at a lower concentration. Your skin will begin to adapt to the cellular changes and slowly you will be able to introduce a higher concentration once your skin becomes tolerant of the active.
It will also be subject to what your concerns are (what results do you want to achieve?)
2. Application of your retinol
Always read your chosen retinol brands guidelines as these will be specific to that product
Most retinol products are advised to be applied as part of your evening skincare routine. This is when your skin is repairing, regenerating and renewing itself so makes it a perfect time to apply your retinol. Retinol aids in the reawakening of collagen production, stimulates fibroblasts production and encouraging skin cell renewal.
As a general rule, use sparingly.
Less is more with a retinol based product.
Apply to cheeks, forehead and chin.
Try not to get too close to the surrounding eye area, nasal labial folds (sides of the nose) and mouth area - if the concentration is high (or prescription strength) it can cause redness and some irritation so be aware. Apply to freshly cleansed and dry skin.
Press and then lightly massage your chosen retinol into the skin. You can then wait til you feel the product is absorbed before applying the next steps in your skincare routine.
Try not to layer too many products when using your retinol product as this is the star attraction of your routine!
It’s also vital to remember to apply an SPF as part of your morning skincare routine. This is to help protect the skin regeneration prompted by the use of your retinol.
3. Consistency and patience is key
Depending on the strength and individual brand directions given, you may experience some mild discomfort and peeling. You may wish to reduce the amount of times you are using your retinol and readdress the strength (concentration).
It is most likely that you’ll start to see a real difference in your skin after 3 months of initially introducing the product. However, some brands claim this can be sooner and is dependent upon each individual (lifestyle, specific skin concerns that you are targeting).
So remember to start slowly and allow your skin to show you how it’s coping with this specific active.
Be consistent for the best results as it takes time for this wonderful ingredient to support, lift and help reverse those signs of ageing!
