Whenever, I am lucky enough to go for a facial, hands down the most enjoyable part is the massage. Lifting and sculpting my facial muscles leaves my skin looking healthy, rejuvenated and absolutely glowing! I love the benefits of lymphatic massage, reducing any puffiness and fluid retention, especially around the eyes. Acupressure point based massage allows for deep relaxation and a mindful way to zone into the treatments whilst energy pathways are unblocked. So how do achieve these results at home?
Now, being a busy Mummy to two boys under 4, I suppose I became guilty of doing a quick 3 step routine. Cleanse, tone and moisturise. However, looking in the mirror my skin lacked that youthful glow that I had in my 20's (and took for granted!) It started to look tired and the plumpness had somewhat disappeared, sad times. I decided I needed to put aside time for my skin, at least once to twice a week, a mini self care ritual would become a weekly habit (usually on a Sunday evening.)
I am lucky enough to have been trained by a select variety of amazing brands in my career and each has had their own signature massages, designed to target a multitude of concerns. So I pulled on my existing knowledge to incorporate different elements of the massages I had been taught, and I wish I had done it sooner. Instantly the results are visible. The muscles that make up your face, are in need of what you may do at the gym for the muscles of your body. They need to be stretched and moved to encourage healthy blood flow and circulation.
A simple way to start becoming more confident in giving yourself a facial massage, is simply by spending 3-5 minutes longer massaging in your cleansing product in the evening. Taking time to really work in the product will have amazing benefits to your skin. But, if you want some more advice or guided direction for self facial massage read below.
Simple Tips to get you started - Lindsay's Self-Care Facial Massage
Start with clean skin, spritz your face with a hydrating toning mist
Choose a facial massage oil or balm - apply this product all over the face and neck area with an intention of gently working the product into the skin
Divide your face into sections. Forehead, eye area, cheeks, chin, jaw and neck
Begin with circular motions using the tips of your fingers and work each area for a minute or two. Repeat this but apply a deeper pressure. You may start to notice a pink glow to your skin, this is called erythema and is a good sign that the circulation is being invigorated
Make a fist with both hands and gently use a knuckling action, working from the centre of the face out wards and in downward motions where the neck is concerned
Using the pads of your fingertips use a light pitter-patter motion - as if little raindrops are fluttering over your face to energise and re-awaken the skin
End by smoothing any left over product into the skin using the whole area of your palms - as if you are stroking over your skin
As you become more confident and in a regular mindset of introducing this into your weekly routine, you can start to introduce facial massage tools. I enjoy using my Rose Quartz Roller (pictured) but have just discovered the amazing Rose Quartz Gua Sha (pictured) and it has moved my self facial massage up another level. Such a beautiful tool to use and allows you to focus your intention even more to create a sense of well-being....and just like magic your skin will look renewed, vibrant, healthy and glowing.
